Kosta's Rockdale, Calabria Panineria, Frank's Deli, Lombardo and Sandoitchi Sydney Sandwich Crawl

I went on a Sandwich crawl with my friends Howard and Ferdinando to show y'all some of the best sandwiches in Sydney right now. All the sandwich places in this list were all curated by Howard. They are all Howard approved.

Soul Deli, Surry Hills

What is up guys?! Let me start by saying that this is one blog post that I’m excited to share with all of you for 2 reasons. First being that the café that I’ll be talking about does amazing coffee and the second reason is that they serve Korean inspired brunch dishes. Y’all know that I love Korean cuisine in general.

The café is called Soul Deli and is in Surry hills. Soul Deli is run by the same team behind Soul Dining (specifically by husband and wife Daero Lee and Illa Kim). The space has a minimal and welcoming vibe. I also really like the touches of Seoul pixel artwork and the fact that they show case products of local designers and artists in the Korean community. The coffee is sourced from one of my current favourite roasters in Sydney, Primary Coffee. I went with Chocolatesuze and Noods a few weekends ago.

This is the first café to showcase a variety of kimchi choices from umami packed kimchi to vegan kimchi. They have mentioned that no fish product is used for the vegan kimchi, hence why it’s vegan.

If my memory serves me right, the Primary Coffee I had was from Bolivia. I ordered 2 cold brews because it was that good. It had notes of stone fruits and apple. It went down really well.

One of my favourite items was their pork belly kimchi cheese sandwich ($18), which has provolone & American cheese, fried kimchi, pork belly and served with house made pickles. Technically, it’s a toastie and a damn amazing one! Fried or grilled kimchi is the best guys! Try it if you haven’t, its life changing. It added smoky notes and extra umami to the toastie. The cheese was nicely melted and the pork was buttery.

The sweet corn kimchi pizza ($22) was not too bad but it came across more like a corn fritter than a kimchi pizza/pancake. I was expecting more of kimchi cheese pancakes you can get from Korean restaurants. I feel like it needed more kimchi and instead of feta, I would have preferred a combo of melted provolone and American cheese (like what was used for the toastie).

The Korean schnitzel ($26) was another winner! It was crumbed pork loin with Korean mushroom sauce and served with kimchi and rice. The coating was so crisped, and the meat was quite tender and juicy. The sauce was creamy with notes of umami and some sweet & sour hints.

My absolute favourite here was their buttermilk hotcakes ($16) that came with maple syrup and Tasmanian salted cultured butter. We also ordered KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) on top for an extra $8 since they recommend it and we love KCF. So why not right? The pancakes were so damn good and fluffy! The KFC was smothered in yangnyeom sauce (Korean sweet chilli sauce) and I would also recommended for y’all to order this with your hotcakes. The sauce was caramel-y and had notes of umami. The fried chicken has rippled crisped coating and was so juicy in the inside.

We ended out brunch with a massive scone that was sent to us by the kitchen on the house. It was nice and fluffy. We were also provided with cream that they wouldn’t normally serve with the scone.

Overall, we were quite happy with the experience. Coffee was amazing and most of the food were amazing, I would definitely come back here for more.

Toastie Smith Chatswood, Sydney

I miss Seoul and all its glorious food. This includes the famous Egg Drop Korea, which is an all-day breakky themed toasted sandwich shop. Luckily, Sydney is not missing out!

Recently, the new Toastie Smith has opened in the heart of Chatswood. At Toastie Smith, you can get fluffu egg based toasted sandwiches with a variety of fillings from prawns to spam & ham! Watch my latest vlog as we explore one thing: Is Toastie Smith Sydney’s answer to Egg Drop?! Watch the video below:

*If you haven't yet, please subscribe to my Youtube channel and hit the notification bell to say up to date with all my new videos*

I met up with my good friend and OG Sydney Food Blogger Chocolatesuze back on the 13th of June.  It's truffle season in Sydney around June to August and many restaurants have a special truffle menu on offer. Suze and I normally love to go on food crawls all around Sydney and we seized the Truffle season opportunity to check out Devon North Sydney's truffle menu.

Premium To Go Pancakes from GRAM Sydney

Double cheese burger from Bush

We also went to Gram (yes Gram from Japan) in Chatswood to buy some takeaway fluffy premium to go pancakes and ended the food crawl with cheeseburgers from Bush in Redfen.

Kurumac Cafe, Marrickville

My favourite café north of bridge has opened an offshoot in Marrickville. You’ll find the new Kurumac Café in the Addison Road area, which is also home to other great coffee shops like Coffee Alchemy. Kurumac is Japanese for Coolmac. Yes, you’ve guess that right, it’s by the same awesome team behind Coolmac Café in Kirribilli.

Pastries by Bread and Butter Project

Kurumac is a partnership between my homies Eugene Leung and Dika Prianata. The space is very Japanese in terms of minimalism and clean lines. Everything from décor to fittings are smooth and crisp. Then there’s the uber cool murals done by artist Ar-chive. Head chef Jun brings his Japanese café style flair to Marrickville with his Japanese café classics with a twist. I visited them twice this past week.

Their coffee is sourced from Campos. For filter coffee lovers out there, they have a rotating batch ($5) on offer. They had a fruity Kenya available on batch during my visit. They use the Campos Superior blend for their milk coffee. I had a piccolo latte ($4) and it had a full body with milk chocolate notes.

The onigiri rice ball set ($14) comes with miso soup and tamagoyaki. You get two sushi rice balls where 1 is stuffed with avocado and the other with tanaka or Japanese pickled mustard greens. Simple yet addictive! The tamagoyaki were fluffy, slightly sweet and flavoursome.

The grilled salmon congee ($17) is a must try from their all day menu. It’s a Japanese style congee with perfectly cooked grilled salmon and umami packed juicy ikura. To top all of that, it also comes with crispiest and super tasty salmon skin.

The curry scrambled eggs and tempura prawns ($19) on toast was another favourite of mine. Delightful fluffy eggs with Japanese curry and crisped tempura. The creamy chilli sauce also had notes of umami.

The ox tongue curry with koshihikari rice ($24) is available during lunch. The ox tongue was tender and buttery, which is nicely complimented by Jun’s very own Japanese curry blend and dollops of cream. The fragrant koshihikari rice was perfect for mopping up all that delicious curry.

Another dish that y’all need to try is the tempura eel with green tea broth rice ($23) a.k.a. ochazuke. There’s just another whole level of depth to the flavours when you have rice poured with green tea broth and paired with tempura eel. You get earthy, sweet and umami notes and the contrast of textures just works so well.

They have a few beverages that uses Mapo Newtown (my current favourite gelato shop in Sydney) gelato. Their hojicha gelato milkshake was insanely good. There’s a nice balance of that roasted tea and creamy milky goodness.

Wagyu beef, udon and prawn fritter
Kurumac is the best of 2 worlds: Japanese flavours and good Australian vibes. Another awesome thing about their spot is that there’s a lot of street parking in the area.

Crafted Addiction - Marrickville, Sydney

Circa Espresso in Parramatta is not only an established icon in the Sydney cafe scene but it also breeds top-notch alumnus. Take Stitch Coffee roasters and Meraki Merchants for instance. Another ex-Circa barista has recently opened a cafe in Marrickville.

The new Crafted Addiction is located near Marrickville train station. Owner and head barista Yianni designed the shop with old Circa offshoot Three Ropes in mind. The space has a mediterranean vibe to it and some vintage fittings. The food has Modern Australian, Greek and Asian influences.

The coffee here is amazing! Yianni himself roasts the house blend. It is heavy on Ethiopian coffee and nicely blended with some coffee from Peru. It tasted quite bold and fruity in my flat white. Stitch Coffee roasts all the single origin coffees used in the shop. The Colombian coffee I had as an espresso tasted sweet and vibrant with notes of red wine.

Classic dishes like eggs benedict ($17) is available. You get a choice of either smoked salmon or beef bacon. The lovely salmon came with the usual hollandaise and spinach on toast.

Another classic available with a twist is their pancakes ($18). Stacks of soft pancakes topped with poached pear, calebaut chocolate, and blueberries with earl grey syrup and pear cream on the side. I feel like the pancakes needed to be a bit more fluffy but nevertheless the combination of flavours worked well. Be warned, this dish is massive!

The mixed mushroom broth ($18) udon dish is available for breakfast and lunch. It came with spring onions, swiss brown, enoki, udon and a choice of onsen egg or tofu. I opted for the egg of course. I'm a fan of anything-mushroom broth and this one was just one big comforting bowl of goodness. Majority of the flavours were a good balance of sweet and notes of sour flavour with light umami. The noodles were also perfectly cooked and had a nice chew to it.

There's more on the menu that I would like to try like sagnaki prawns and Marrickville fried chicken burger. You guys definitely need to check them out for superb coffee, delicious food and excellent service.
